Getting the Best Acai Berry Benefits

There is much talk in the news of this new food supplement made from a berry which locally thrives in the Amazon rainforest- the acai berry supplement. The acai berry supplement claims to have nutritional components which give health benefits. Famous TV personalities, talk show hosts, celebrity medical professionals like Dr. Oz and Dr. Perricone have promoted and talked about the acai fruit and acai berry supplements and the benefits we may derive from them. The acai berry contains high levels of antioxidants as well as amino acids and essential fatty acids which boost energy and help keep the body away from harmful disease.

Research reveals that the anthocyanin, which is a form of antioxidant, is found to be in acai berry. The berry contains 10 to 30 times more of anthocyanins as that of red grapes and red wine.

Selecting Acai Berry Supplements

In selecting the right acai berry supplement, one must consider the content of the product. Because of the difficulty of making fresh acai berries available in the market, many companies have developed ways in bringing the acai berry benefits without actually bringing forth the fruit. The acai berry is a highly perishable fruit. This is the reason why it becomes impossible to transport fresh acai berries from the Amazon to our local markets.

The fat content of acai berry is about 30 to 50% and because of such fat content, it easily expires in just a day after harvesting. Foods containing high levels of fat tend to perish easily compared to foods containing less fat.

Processing of Acai Berries

By making acai into powdered form or by freeze-drying it, it can now be transported from the Amazon and be distributed to the local consumers in the form of acai berry supplement. But the best way to get the nutritional benefits from acai berries is through its freeze-dried form. One gram of freeze-dried acai berry scored 34,00 in the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity Test, which even exceeds the score of 100 grams of fresh acai berries which is only 5,500. The difference indicates that you can get the nutritional components of 6 grams of acai berries in just 1 gram of the powdered form of acai berry supplement.

There are numbers of different forms of acai berry supplement available in the market. Some claim to be more effective than others. There are those which claim that their acai berry supplement is more efficient in helping reduce weight, boost energy or eliminate free radicals and toxins compared to other acai berry products and brands.
