The Power of Acai Berries

by Faith on September 27, 2009

acai berriesAcai berries are indeed the new “superfood”. These fruits are popularly used around the world by celebrities, professionals in sports, and health professionals. As we all know by now, these fantastic berries were first stumbled upon and used by Brazilians many years ago. Apparently, they were popularized recently by surfers from California and people from Brazil. So these berries clearly have some great benefits… But have you ever wondered how acai berries work?

How Acai Berries Work

The concept of how acai berries work starts with what they are made of. Our bodies run on 3 essential nutrients: carbohydrates, lipids (fats), and protein. The acai berries have carbohydrates, amino acids, and essential fatty acids, which are needed to make protein. They also have anthocyanins, which is the special component of how acai berries work. This anthocyanin is the main component that is provoking much interest from nutrition and diet professionals.

Benefits of Anthocyanin

Anthocyanin is found in high concentration in the acai berry. There is more anthocyanin in the berry than in almost all other fruits we know of. Another food with a high level of anthocyanin is red wine, but the content in acai berry exceeds those levels by far. Acai berries have about 10-30 times the amount of anthocyanin as red wine. Consuming anthocyanin can give you the following benefits:

• slows down aging
• gives anti oxidants
• improves healing
• has anti cancerous effect
• promotes clear and healthy skin
• contains anti inflammatory effects (good for bloating, infections, and healing)
• boosts circulation of the blood system
• heals or treats allergies
• an immune system booster

Acai berries can even treat and help or prevent some diseases such as fibrocysts or retinopathy (usually a complication from diabetes).
The essential fatty acids in Acai berries are necessary for the body to function properly. It’s important to get these fatty acids from good sources, specifically plants like the Acai berry. The essential fatty acids in Acai berries are even known to have cholesterol fighting properties. This can help to prevent diseases like obesity, depression, heart attacks, and more.

Vitamins and Minerals Found in Acai Berries

Two vitamins and minerals found in the Acai berry are iron and potassium. Both of the nutrients are essential for good health. Low iron can cause anemia, too much bleeding, or gastric ulcers. Potassium regulates blood pressure, the pH of the body, and the nervous system. Potassium can be lost from sweating or urination, so we have to consume it regularly, and Acai berries are a great source.

The amino acids that are in Acai berries are needed to synthesize proteins in the body. The body uses amino acids to build protein, and there are 20 different amino acids that the body needs to do this.

So this is how Acai berries work. Some other benefits are: better sex drive, anti-parasitic, and just improved health in general. By now, I am convinced that acai berries would indeed be a great addition to a healthy diet.
